Concepts in Futures trading

Futures Trading Guide - Everything You Need to Know by Jeff Daniels

Similar to the Options trading, Futures trading also deals with the trading of contracts or bonds. Its contract, which is known as the "Futures contract," is an agreement between the seller and the purchaser regarding a specific product at a definite amount and time. This agreement however, is determined by the trading market.

Future trading guides are particular about the Futures price. As this type of trading is done in popular futures exchanges, the futures price greatly settles based on the law of supply and demand. This scenario happens between the buying and the selling of the bond, when the trends are drawn based on this economic law.

In this type of trading, the buyers and the sellers anticipate high prices in the future. Largely, the cost of the contract remains in effect during this market situation. Fluctuations of the value cause the bonds to go low. Thus, transactions in this type of market are largely reliant on the profit margin than those commodities involved.

Terminologies in the Futures trading guide are also pertinent to the investor's venture. These terms involve essential methodologies, that should be understood by futures traders most especially the novice ones. Thus, in this Futures trading guide, these terms will be discussed thoroughly.

One of the key terms that a Futures trader should know is the "settlement price." The "settlement price" is the official final price in the futures contract or agreement at the closing stage of the trading session. This price remains fixed for a specific date, as dictated by the trade in the Futures market.

The "settlement date" or the "delivery date" on the other hand, is the date of Futures deliverance. This very date is relevant to the bond's deliverance.

Owners of the Futures bond are under obligation of obtaining and delivering bonds in accordance to the rules of the contract. This is then the obvious dissimilarity of the Futures trader from the Options trader for Options buyers have rights to their assets but they do not have any obligation at all. Options traders have the choice whether they are going to execute a contract or not. In the Futures trade however, the buyers and the sellers are under no force in settling contracts during the delivery date. The sellers give the assets to the purchasers upon finishing a deal. If the money has been settled in the Futures bond, loss-incurring positions are shifted to profit making.

These insights are just a few of the pertinent information in the Futures trading. There are a lot of information that needs to be discussed and studied before one can ensure success in the Futures trading. This Futures trading guide is just a piece of the pie that a Futures trader should eat before getting involved in bigger deals in the Futures trading market. There are many terminologies, strategies and methodologies that should be remembered to ensure great profits after every transaction. It is important that you would master them to avoid risks of financial loss.

Risks in Futures Trading

4 Main Risks Involved In Futures Trading by Ricky Lim

There's no doubt that futures trading is inherently a risky business. Anyone who tells you it is 100% risk free is either ignorant or trying to sell you something. The truth is futures trading is a gamble. There's no telling when you are going to win or when you are going to lose. The best strategy is to play this game based on the cards you have and hope for the best.

Futures trading does have huge rewards if you win and that's probably the reason many people are attracted to it. However the chances of you losing big is just as great if not greater particularly if you are new to futures trading.

I outline the 4 main risks when trading in futures. You might want to read further before deciding futures trading is suitable for you.

1. Speculative Business

Futures Trading is speculative in nature. No matter what the experts tell you or predict, it is not always 100% accurate. Take it with a pitch of salt. The best investment strategy is not to put all your eggs in one basket, divesting your investment among different financial instruments.

2. Financial Backing

Futures Trading requires a large capital outlay at the beginning which is expendable. Therefore it is definitely not for the faint of heart. If you are thinking of making money in futures trading to pay your bills, then my advise is don't. You should not use money to pay your bills/loans/grocery to dabble in futures trading. Only use money you can afford to expend.

Ideally, a person who wants to play in futures trading should have at least $10,000 USD in his/her personal trading account.

3. Technical Knowledge

Futures Trading requires an intimate knowledge of financial instruments. At the very least, you should be knowledgeable in the 4 main investments categories namely, income, growth, speculation and inflation hedges. Without adequate knowledge, it will restrict you to where you can invest on the market and lose potential revenue on a particular sector of the financial market.

You might be thinking I can always rely on my broker for advice. While it's good to seek the advice of someone knowledgeable, you should be able to make intelligent decisions on your own and the only way to do that is if you have sufficient knowledge.

4. Only Invest What You Can Lose

I would not advise someone new to trading to dabble in futures simply because of the risks involved.

You should have a balanced portfolio with only a certain percentage invested in futures. My advise is about 10% but that depends on your financial standing and your investment strategy. In general, only use money that you can afford to lose in futures trading.

The 4 main risks I outline above is not meant to discourage you from futures trading. What I want to make clear is you fully understand the risks involved and also what you need to do to better your chances at winning in futures trading.

Basics of futures trading

How Online Future Trading Works by Lesley Lyon

A contract, which is usually an agreement between two parties to buy and sell an asset at a specified time at a specified price, is known as future trading. Future trading is generally carried out on a futures exchange. A futures contract has a standardized date and month of delivery, price and quantity.

Futures are different from forwards in the sense that margin and delivery requirements are different. The futures exchange gives certain standard features for a contract to facilitate liquidity in futures trading. A futures contract may be set before maturity by having an equal and opposite transaction, which is the way majority of the transactions are held.

Expiration date is the date specified in the options or futures contract. The price at which the futures contract trades in the futures market is the futures price and the expiration date is usually the last Thursday of the respective month. Futures contractors are available in three series, having one month, two months and three months expiry cycles. A new contract of three-month expiry is introduced for trading on the Friday following the last Thursday.

Since many types of players are involved in trading futures, it helps in the process of proper price discovery. Apart from this, futures contracts also help in hedging of price risk commodity. Futures contracts are highly useful for the producer due to the fact that he gets an idea of the price that may prevail, which in turn helps him quote a realistic price.

On line future trading assists people to trade and exchange on the futures market and online futures trading allows the traders to scan the most recent exchange offers. The trader can send an order straight away into the exchange trading engine and also get the feed back or confirmation of the contracts instantaneously through on line futures trading.
In this way the trader is able to view a live market on the screen and interact with it.

On line future trading has a lot of advantages. The prices of the derivatives traded on the futures market are updated immediately and in real time through online future trading. Due to this interactivity the individual trader gets transparency of the market and good trade speed .It is possible to access the futures market from any computer with an Internet connection through online futures trading and trade on the important electronic futures exchange, around the globe.

To ensure smooth functioning of the futures trading done at the exchange there are certain inherent systems like the futures rolling settlement. Under the futures rolling system, all the trades that are unfinished at the end of the day are settled. The buyer has to necessarily make payments for the securities bought by him and the seller has to deliver the securities sold by him.
Another system that is in vogue is the weekly settlement system cycle wherein the transactions done during the week are squared off on the last day of the cycle, which means that a trader gets a longer time to speculate. When it comes to the question of trading futures for a living, trading futures is certainly a better choice than investing in equities.

Futures Trading pointers

You can seek training and education from the comforts of your home by accessing the World wide web for information. There is a plethora of data and articles on the ins and outs of futures trading, as well as tips on how to get ahead and make the most out of your investment, on the Internet. All you have to do is conduct a search and you will be faced with thousands of sites offering what you need.

Indeed, with modes communication increasing leaning toward the Internet, more and more people are able to get information on a variety of subjects, especially on financial trading, where the population of loyal patrons increases significantly by the month.

There are various twists and turns recommended by futures trading experts to help you maximize your investment. However, professionals will almost always have these four tips in mind when asked what the four basic principles traders should keep in mind.
1. Make a simple and timely research of the commodity you want to trade in.
It is imperative that these research material be constantly updated and monitored so slight and even negligible movements can be pointed out and paid particular attention.
2. Talk to your broker for advice.
Usually, brokerage houses and analysts have sound and practical insights and guidance about a particular futures item that should be taken well noted.
3. Spread your investment across all lucrative and promising sectors.
This measure can also sometimes be dangerous, but just be beware and analytic when making important and pertinent decisions about your capital and investments.
4. Read analysts’ recommendation every now and then.
Take heed, buy when the recommendation about a stock is ‘buy’ and ‘sell’ when other wise. Do not take risky chances and bets.
Most importantly, practice discipline and learn to reel in your emotions. Futures trading, while relatively predictable compared to other instruments, cannot guarantee wins every time, even if you’ve really researched the commodity you banked on because, well, the market changes all the time. Futures class

Enhancing Your Network through a Futures Class by Mark Soberman

So you have finally decided to jump into the pool of learning futures trading. You already have settled the necessary fees and now you're all set to attend your futures class. But more than just learning each and every lesson included in the course, there's also something else that you must pay attention to while you are in your futures class. Pay attention to the people and try to get along well with them. Your futures class is an effective way to expand your business network partnership.

The good thing about getting into a futures class is that you are assured that all of the people you will come across through it are interested in the same thing. Consider the fact that forex trading is on the technical side. It's not something that anybody can just take because they are interested in it. There should be actual experience, even if minimal, in it already. So you can really have the chance to brush up with experts or forex rookies in a futures class.

Take the time to get to know the people in your futures class. Try to see what sort of currencies they trade and why they chose to enroll in the same class. If there are meet-ups beyond the confines of your futures class together with them, then make the effort of being there. This is an excellent way to expand your personal and professional relationships. You should also be open enough to discuss forex stuff with them because you never know if that's their way of being comfortable enough with you and to show how interested they are to get to know you better.

Futures contract rollover

How do Futures Contract Rollover Days Work? by Mark Soberman

The rollover day for a futures contract is one of the most misunderstood features in trading these contracts. The expiration day is easily understood. It occurs on the third Friday of each quarter month, that is March, June, September, and December. That day is when the futures contract must be settled.

However, the fact is that futures are a trading tool, a derivative which gives excellent leverage to your money, and the actual expiration date does not really represent the mass of activity that you might expect. Instead, a great deal of the activity takes place on the rollover day, which is generally eight days before expiration.

The underlying contract for a futures trade would require a physical delivery, and to avoid this the normal process is to close out the contract, which basically means make a financial settlement, in advance of the designated expiration date. An alternative to closing the contract is to roll it over into the next quarterly period if you want to keep the trade open.

You may have a choice on rollover in some markets. In the Forex markets, the rollover will happen automatically. For regular futures, your broker may offer automatic rollover, and this will take place eight days before expiration date. Other markets, such as those in the UK, have different standards.

You may have heard about difficulties with liquidity, and increased volatility associated with rollover days. These result from the changeover that happens. Most traders move from trading the current contract into the next contract, and that means that the volume of the expiring contract becomes less, usually resulting in larger spreads, and the trading volume for the next period increases.

The expiring contract can still be traded, as it is still available up to the expiration day, but generally the liquidity will suffer and you are best advised, if you want to continue in this position, to change to the new contract. This will avoid the problems associated with reduced trading volume. The big shift in volume happens at 9:30 EST on rollover day.

The increasing spreads on the expiring contract can be harmful to you if you daytrade, and the new contract will usually have very tight spreads on the rollover day. This is also important if you are a longer-term trader who wants to carry the contract past the expiration date, as the small spreads mean that you will pay the least to do the transfer. If you are considering opening a position within a few days of rollover day, then you may find it better to use the new contract at the start.

For reasons given above, you'll find that the trading environment is better if you switch from trading one contract to the next on rollover day. The only possible exception is if you are considering opening and closing your position on the same day, when you might open on the expiring contract -- but you would need to keep in mind the effect on the spreads that the mass move over to the new contract will have.

Successs in futures trading

2 Keys To Futures Trading The Successful Way
By: Halston

Do you know what the amazing thing about trading futures is? You can't lose!

I know that sounds unbelievable... and I'm not suggesting that you'll never have losing trades, what I am saying is that ultimately unprofitable futures trading can be sidestepped if traders would simply follow two funadmental trading rules:

1 - Don't trade under-capitalized
2 - Use (and never abandon) stoploss orders

While you don't need tons of money to be successful in trading, you should have enough to ride out the invariable loss. To give you an idea of how much you should have, always consider having (at least) 10x your average loss.

If your stop-loss orders will usually get you out of the market with no more than a $500 loss on the trade, then you should have at least $5,000 total trading capital. (Hey, if you can't pick one winner out of ten trades, you need more help than I can provide you with.) If your average risk/potential loss is closer to $1,000, then you should have about $10,000 of trading capital.

Another way you can come up with your recommended trading capital amount is to take your expected (or actual) loss on three consecutive trades and multiply it by 3. So if you were risking $1,000 per trade, then 3 losing trades would put you down by $3,000. Take that and multiply by 3 to get a suggested starting capital of $9,000 to $10,000.

Let me sum up the lesson of trading capital with this critically important truth about futures trading - Losses are part of the game. Futures trading is speculation. No one (at least no one I've ever met anyway,) speculates with 100% accuracy. But the wonderful thing about futures trading is that you don't need to trade perfectly - you can be quite successful even if you're losing more often than you're winning... as long as you always manage your risk.

And that brings us to point #2 - Always use reasonable stop-loss orders. There's no way to assemble an accurate statistical figure on this, but from looking at my own trading, as well as that of clients and fellow traders, over the course of many years, I would guess that about 90% of busted trading accounts are the result of someone "falling in love with" a trade. Rather than take a reasonable loss, people pull their stop orders, and stay in a trade - vainly hoping for it to turn back in their favor - until it bankrupts their trading account.

I've seen it happen quite often - and certainly more times than I care to think about. Let me make this as simple as possible for all of us - Never cancel a stop-loss order. Never. Got it? Never. Believe me, when a market is close to stopping me out, I can always easily dream up a dozen "good" reasons to either cancel or move my stop. The only problem is that they aren't good reasons - they just look good at the time. They're really rationalizations devised to give me hope that I was right, when the market is clearly pointing out that I was wrong. Take your losses; take them early; take them when they're cheap and relatively painless. There's no shame in being wrong in your judgment about a market. The only shameful part is being unwilling to change when you were wrong, and stubbornly clinging to a bad trade.

Futures Option Trading - Stock Option Trading - Option Trading Tools 320

If you search on the Internet, you will find a number of investment options. In addition to the payment mode, find out about the services provided by them, commission rates and the way they handle accounts. Initially trading was done by stock brokers on the behalf of people on the floor of the stock exchange. The FOREX options trading market began as an over-the-counter (OTC) monetary vehicle for large banks, financial organizations, and international companies to hedge against foreign currency exposure.
If the strike price equals the current market price, the option is said to be at-the-money. The strike price, or exercise price, of an option determines whether that contract is in-the- money, at-the-money, or out-of-the-money. Knowing the basics of Puts and Call option allow these traders to be prepared for a High Stakes contest.
Trading options using this strategy is secured because you can limit your losses. Your risk is limited to the price of the premium - and you can easily employ a stop, further limiting your potential for loss. Online options trading is fast becoming a popular way of trading options.
However, if you see other options, there are many limitations - the first one is lock-in period. For instance, if a person inclined to invest in the domestic market opens a site of the foreign market, it can be confusing. For equity options, this is generally the third Friday of the expiration month.

Futures contracts

Forex Futures Contracts by Anil Kumar Raju Addipalli

The Forex market is a vast market where currencies are traded daily in the world. This market offers different types of instruments such as futures, options, Forex spot or warrants. Future, ie, futures contracts are financial contracts that grant to buy or sell assets in the future. These contracts, established between two participants, the buyer and the seller, determine in advance the exchange rate of a future transaction currency at a specified date (called deadline).

Futures contracts are born in the 16th century, but they know in their present form since the second half of the 19th century, including the markets for American grain. During the 70 years, these contracts have been extended to financial products. In a first time, foreign exchange, but by extending the interest rate, then the stock indices that have a major role.

The futures trading allows traders to hedge against fluctuations in exchange rates that could jeopardize their transactions. However, most traders use this type of contract to speculate, and so can take advantage of variations of the same exchange rate. Futures contracts require participants to buy or sell at the agreed date, which allows them to cover their operations.
This type of trading has a major advantage because it allows traders to obtain substantial gains over a period more or less short, but it can also "cover" the operations of currency scheduled in advance. The leverage effect plays an important role in the trading of futures.

However, the currency trading or futures (futures contracts) often involve financial risk, and losses can be greater than the sum invested, which is why it is strongly advised to use what we call orders stop (their English name stop loss). Indeed, the futures market are subject to certain conditions which may for example limit the type, number and cost of transactions to be effected. Traders use so these stop orders to protect their position against the fluctuations and contingencies of the market. When the contracts come to an end, they are always sold, but traders have the ability to "roll their positions", ie to maintain their positions in opting for contracts over the next due date.

Practice futures trades

Futures Trading Is Better When You Start In A Trading Simulator by Nicci Barnes

Futures Trading Is Better When You Start With A Trading Simulator The first line of the trading disclosure document reads as follows; "All trading involves high risk and you could lose a substantial amount of money." Of course there's more to it than that, all of it pretty doom and gloomy. And rightfully so, if we are to believe the statisticians telling us that over 90% of day traders will lose all or most of their original investment within the first year. With that in mind then, you would be well advised to make sure you know what you are doing before you take the plunge.

One way to get an edge is to trade in a practice mode before risking your own money. Forget about paper trading. That can be a meaningless hypothetical exercise. At best it is very ambiguous and you really do not gain anything from it. Simulated trading on the other hand allows you to trade in the actual market. Even though your orders do not go to the exchange, you do go through all the trading motions where you will actually experience the trades in real time and get the feel of the market dynamics. It is the next best thing to trading with real money.

Some brokerage houses provide a simulator platform with test accounts of $5,000 to $50,000, along with a 30 to 90 day trial period including live feed and live quotes. This is as close to the real thing as it gets. You have the opportunity to practice your trading strategy live, but with play money. You get to learn the trading platform and the actual interface you'll be using. And while you are in this training mode, you can hone your trading concepts and you can make mistakes without being concerned about the consequences.

Simulated trading enables you to trade using real time quotes for select emini futures markets. You will also have access to real time streaming charts. You can practice placing your orders online and receiving confirmations in mere seconds. You will learn how to use your order management tools to view your working, filled or cancelled orders. You can become proficient with the trading matrix, learning how to place various order types, preset targets, stop losses and multiple orders.

While it is possible to trade any futures index, commodity or stock in the simulator, the Dow Jones emini index is undoubtedly the most popular trading vehicle for the beginning day trader. The reasons for its widespread popularity among new traders as well as seasoned veterans are as follows:

* Low initial trading deposit

* Low initial and maintenance margins

* Smooth and decisive price movement

* Low tick values

* Accessible to traders throughout the world

Just remember this: Before you go live, you had better make sure you are getting it right in the simulator, because if you don't, your chances of making it in the real world environment will be greatly diminished. When you are risking your own money the human emotions and fear factor are at a much higher level.

One of the best features and perhaps most overlooked advantage of using a simulator with a mock account is that it teaches you money management. If you treat your test account like it was your own money, and if you formulate and follow a trading plan (which I will cover in a separate article) you are more likely to get the maximum benefit from the simulator experience which will become vitally important when you start trading live.

Internet and forex trading

Trading Online In The Foreign Exchange Market by John J Callingham

Trading online in the foreign exchange market has become increasingly popular as a result of the rapid popularization and adoption of the internet by countries throughout the world. Unlike most financial products, transactions in the foreign exchange market are not carried out via an organized exchange. Instead, traders are linked together via the internet and other advanced telecommunication devices. This allows people to trade in the foreign exchange market 24 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Before you jump onto the Forex bandwagon, you need to understand that trading online in the foreign exchange market, like all other investments, require knowledge its relevant areas. So here are some tips to get you started on your online Forex trading journey.

Getting Started On Forex Trading Tip #1- Get A Credible Broker

Setting up an online foreign exchange trading account should be the first thing to do for individuals keen on entering the foreign exchange market. This often entails the need to search for a credible online broker through which you can place your trades. No way would you want to allow your hard-earned money to be handled by a shady company that could possibly cheat you of your hard-earned savings.

Your online broker should be a registered FCM (Futures Commission Merchant) with the CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission). You could also check with your local bank for a list of such online brokers that have clean records with their dealings with retail traders.

Getting Started On Forex Trading Tip #2- Fund Your Account

Subsequently, set aside the amount of money which you would like to commit to your investments. Most online brokers offer various accounts to suit the investment needs of various individuals. A mini account usually requires only a small outlay of about $250 while a standard account usually requires a commitment from $1000 to $2500. In most cases, your broker would require you to sign a margin contract, allowing your broker to make trading decisions on your behalf should you choose to engage in transactions that are too risky.

In any case, getting your online foreign exchange trading account is only the first step to achieving financial success on the foreign exchange market.

Getting Started On Forex Trading Tip #3- Invest In Forex Education

It is necessary to put in hard work to familiarize yourself with the foreign exchange markets as well as to acquire the necessary expertise to make sound trading decisions. In order to obtain a sound grounding in these aspects, it would be a good idea to read up on successful investors in the foreign exchange market. Notable investors include George Soros, a veteran investor who was able to profit terrifically during the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis.

Knowledge in technical analysis is also a necessity for trading online in the foreign exchange market. Essentially, this entails the ability to read various charts on the price movements of the various currencies in order to arrive at a decision on whether to buy, sell or hold a particular trade position. Some of these tools include the Stochastic Oscillator, Moving Averages and the RSI Indicator.

Success in trading online in the foreign exchange market is a lifelong knowledge that can only be developed through experience, sound judgment and hard work. In any case, the payoffs from investing time and effort in your foreign exchange investments are extremely high. Never think the foreign exchange market is a source of easy money. As with all other things, you would need hard work in order to do well.
